President Muhammadu Buhari champions anti-corruption campaign in the African Union

During the opening ceremony of the 30th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), President Muhammadu Buhari officially launched AU’s theme for the year 2018: “Winning the Fight Against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation”.

Describing Corruption as one of the greatest evils of our time, President Buhari thanked his fellow Heads of State for the responsibility entrusted with him to champion the theme for the year. According to him, “Corruption rewards those who do not play by the rules and creates a system of distortion and diversion thereby destroying all efforts at constructive, just and fair governance”. He noted that though, the Continent had made significant strides putting in place legal and policy frameworks, notably, the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC), the frameworks have not had the desired success in tackling the menace of corruption.

To tackle the scourge of corruption, President Buhari emphasized the importance of building strong national and regional institutions. He also stressed the expedience of empowering national anti-corruption agencies, and insulating them from political influence, if corruption must be defeated.
President Buhari informed the Summit that Nigeria had gone far into the implementation of its CHANGE Agenda, which is primarily aimed at fighting corruption. While stating that anti-corruption campaign was an honorable path, President Buhari encouraged his fellow Heads of State to brace-up in the fight against corruption bearing in mind that fighting corruption is not going to be a straightforward task and that corruption does fight back.
