The Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, strives to deliver effective and qualitative consular services to Nigerians in Canada and visitors willing to visit Nigeria. In line with the mandate, the High Commissioner of Nigeria to Canada, H.E. Adeyinka Asekun and Nigerian diplomats and Immigration officers embarked on an E. Passport Intervention exercises to alleviate the plight of Nigerians in Canadian Provinces far from Ottawa. Vancouver city in British Columbia was the first port of call in 2021.

Please, how can those of us who are out of status in Canada since mid 2020 be considered for passport renewal. This is so frustrating, other African countries, Ghana for instance renew passports by proxy, why is this not possible in our country. I have waited months for my renewal appointment and this sad news came up. PleaseAmbassadors do something, i don't want to be to removed from Canada. I am so vulnerable now and this is the last chance i have been given. My appointment date is 7th April

Will the passport renewal/printing proceed as planned especially for expedited requests? Will provisions be made for people that paid for expedited request/ special cases especially now that tickets to travel to Nigeria has been purchased and trip to Nigeria is very important and urgent? Thanks

Hello Kemi, If you have paid for the expedited package, it means you have been captured. The current situation does not affect you. You should be able to track your document as soon as it gets to the post office.

Good day. I live in Vancouver BC and have just come across this intervention. I have my appointment booked for May 6th but I am wondering if I should cancel it given the COVID situation in Ontario. Is this intervention still going on in Vancouver and how may I able to access it so I don't have to come to Ottawa. Thank you so much.

    1. Abu SusanSays

The intervention for Vancouver is over. Since your appointment is in May, let's hope Ontario's government would call off the "stay at home" order then. All things being equal, you should be good for May 6.

Mariam, Read this news and click on any of the two links provided by IRCC solve your case: As a result of the current challenges affecting Immigration services resulting from the 3rd wave of the Coronavirus in Ontario-Canada, the Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa, is pleased to provide Nigerian citizens in Canada with the following vital information. Temporary residents in Canada whose passports/travel documents are about to or have expired and cannot be renewed due to COVID-19 restrictions are encouraged to apply for an extension or restoration of their status online. More information on applying for an extension can be found @ https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/coronavirus-covid19/visitors.html#extend Additional information on applying for restoration is available @ https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/coronavirus-covid19/restoration-extension-trv.html Applicants who apply before their status expires will have their status maintained while their application is being processed. Where additional documentation or information is required to decide on an application (such as a valid passport), Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will request the necessary material. However, they may allow the applicant 90days to submit the required documentation. Nigerians with expired Nigerian passports planning to travel back home are allowed to do so, but must: Obtain clearance from their airline of choice about travelling with an expired Nigerian passport. On arrival in Nigeria, such individuals should make deliberate efforts to visit the closest Nigeria Immigration Service passport renewal office to renew their passport before returning to Canada. Hi Susan, Great and excellent work from you. Please I have a few questions. 1. I already have an appointment booked for may 10th. If Ontario lockdown is not called off and I cant make it, If I apply for travel certificate online, will it be processed? 2. I already have my ticket for Ottawa and also for Nigeria, If I travel with the Travel certificate, will I be able to renew in Nigeria with the application I already filled or will I need to complete a new application and make another payment and possibly I can get refund for the payment I already made online here in Canada. 3. Will there be expedite service with your planned intervention?

    1. Abu SusanSays

Thanks, Alex, You do not have to travel down to Ottawa. The Mission is not opened to people. You can apply for an Emergency Travel Certificate, and you can renew your passport in Nigeria, but you have to complete a new application. You can also ask the immigration office in Nigeria for details. I am not sure of a refund from here.

When do you thing these will happen again?. Will my children and I still get the passports as we already paid for almost a year now or will it be a scam by the Nigerian Government not to refund our money or issue passports and renewal?. Sorry to hear about that, Jay. When did you apply for the ETC? You can travel to Nigeria with your expired Passport. However, you have to ask the Airline to be sure they would accommodate you. As for Nigeria, you do not have a problem because you are going back home. But remember to renew your passport before you return to Canada. Please send me your full name to follow up with your application for ETC on Monday.

I stay in Regina, Saskatchewan and I understand that planning is currently in place by NCAR for this intervention. The 'administrative' cost of $300 per individual is so high. The breakdown of this 'administrative' cost is shrouded in deep secrecy. This 'administrative' cost is separate from the official cost you pay online. There are rumors that it tied to some form of kickbacks to the embassy officials. When questions are asked, they would tell you to fly down to Ottawa to get your passport done. Our counter argument is for those officials to restrict it to only themselves, which they know that is not viable. I could remember with this passport intervention, was really an intervention. when I was in school about 10 years ago, it was free. Then it gradually increased to $50, then $100, then $150, then $200 .....until we got to $300. This trend seems to be gaining traction by the official for Nigerian Committee all over Canada. Its not fair ! We all need each other to succeed. Kindly assist.
