As a result of the current challenges affecting Immigration services resulting from the 3rd wave of the Coronavirus in Ontario-Canada, the Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa, is pleased to provide Nigerian citizens in Canada with the following vital information.
- Temporary residents in Canada whose passports/travel documents are about to or have expired and cannot be renewed due to COVID-19 restrictions are encouraged to apply for an extension or restoration of their status online.
- More information on applying for an extension can be found @
- Additional information on applying for restoration is available @
- Applicants who apply before their status expires will have their status maintained while their application is being processed.
- Where additional documentation or information is required to decide on an application (such as a valid passport), Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will request the necessary material. However, they may allow the applicant 90days to submit the required documentation.
Nigerians with expired Nigerian passports planning to travel back home are allowed to do so, but must:
- Obtain clearance from their airline of choice about travelling with an expired Nigerian passport.
- On arrival in Nigeria, such individuals should make deliberate efforts to visit the closest Nigeria Immigration Service passport renewal office to renew their passport before returning to Canada.

Thanks for your reply, but I think you did not understand my prior message, because I have checked your site based on your reply, and there is no information as pertaining to my case. My case is this, I need to travel out of Canada to Ukraine, and my Nigerian passport is expiring, I was invited to the embassy on the 7th of April, but on the 6th of April, the embassy sent a message that they were closed. I was ready to pay for the expedited passport renewal, that's how desperate I was. Hi Susan, Good evening. With the new extension of the of the "stay-at-home" and the blockage of interprovincial borders, this will put most Nigerian into the state of uncertainty and chaos. With the peculiar case of Nengi , and the subsequent cases as such, I think that's where the Nigerain High Commission, Ottawa, being the only accessible place for the renewal of our passports, should intervene. I suggest an official letter to IRCC from Nigerian High Commission, explaining our plights as regards the covid restrictions effects, is crucial. Please, I understand that it's not been easy for anyone, however, it's not equal the fault of anyone that this virus distrupt every plans and activities. The IRCC shouldn't act as if it's our fault either. We really need The Nigerian High Commission to represent us and speak on our behalf. Thanks and may God bless us all.

Adeyinka Asekun and the team of Diplomats at the High Commission did as soon as the government of Ontario's first stay-at-home order was declared. The government provided the links to IRCC in response to the official letter. The High Commission is on Canadian soil and must respect the rules. Hello, I have a question. My study permit and passport have been expired for nearly a year now and although I have applied for both, I have been unable to obtain my study permit due to my expired passport. I have been trying to obtain this passport since last year but there were many complications at the embassy. Finally, the opportunity came up earlier this year to book an appointment, which was also great timing because the IRCC has now given me till the end of May to submit my passport. Fiyinfoluwa, Sorry about the ups and downs. No thanks to COVID-19. We are following the rules of the Ontario government. If we reopen before your date of appointment then, you have no problem. If not, you will have to wait. However, I will advise that you re-apply for an extension again from IRCC. They are aware of the challenges.

Hi Faith, The first is the normal payment for renewal. Expedited issuance ($200) is for you to be captured and then collect your passport the same day. We are current closed to the public due to the stay at home order imposed by the Government of Ontario. Hello Susan Abu, I applied for passport renewal and is scheduled for July. Our old passports which has been in CBSA custody have all expired long time ago. Immigration requires we submit a valid passport for which reason I applied for renewal. Though these passports have expired long time ago, the process of retrieving documents from CBSA takes time. I have photocopy of our passports and would like to know if photocopy of the biodata page will serve without the booklet itself. Thanks for your expected prompt response. Remain blessed.

Hi Abu Susan, I booked my appointment for July 19th for 9:30am and booked my flight accordingly. However the time for the flight has changed and now the arrival time to Ottawa is 9:38am as opposed to 8:12am which it was before. How do I go about this please. As there are no more appointment date till September. Would it be possible to still enter so as not to miss this appointment date?

Hi Jules, If you are a student, you can renew if you are 12months to the expiry date. However, the recommended time is six months to the expiry date on your passport.

Hi Susan, I tried to book an appointment for passport renewal & discovered that Saturdays and Sundays are open on the consular calendar which I believe must be an oversight that needs to be corrected. I also discovered that dates that were unavailable when I first checked few days ago have all become available. Hope this too is not an error since I cancelled my earlier December 22nd appointment that was far for a nearer date on October 7th.

Hi Royal, Thank you for the observation. We do not work weekends. As for the new dates available, yes, they are authentic. We have cleared up our backlog, so we released these days that were not cancelled by applicants who have been captured already. So go ahead and pick any of them apart from weekends.

Hi Susan. I have an exam to write in the UKin March and my passport expires in July, 2022. The VFS application center in Edmonton requires that my passport has at least 6 months validity before my visa is processed. Can I fly down to Ottawa to renew right now? As I would be coming from Calgary, Alberta, is it possible to get the passport issued same day? Thank you

Yusuf, You have to go on the website, apply for renewal, pay the fees and pick a date. It is not a walk-in affair. We admit a few applicants per day because of COVID-19 protocols.

Hi Susan. We had interview for passport renewal on the 7th of October which is exactly 2 months today and we are yet to receive our passports. Which method can we use to check the status of our new passport ( whether they have been mailed out or when they will be mailed out) as the embassy did not give us any reference number or link that could be used to check the status of our application. Hi Susan, I am on a study permit and would like to renew my passport before I apply for a post-graduate work permit (PGWP). I am eligible for a 3 years work permit but my passport has slightly over a year validity left. If I apply with my current passport, I will only be approved up to the duration of my passport (about 1 year). Kindly confirm that I am able to apply for a passport renewal given that I still have one year left before expiry. Thank you
