Hi Abu Susan, thanks for the update. Please I don’t know if I have to enter the money order bought for administrative fee electronically or just bring along on the interview date when embassy opens to public for passport renewal. Already got a date scheduled for April 8, but canceled due to lockdown.

Hey Abu Susan, I applied for my passport renewal, but required to submit my old passport prior to renewal. My old expired passport is with CBSA, I applied for Canada PR which they requested for a valid travel documents or a letter from Nigeria embassy that prove my identity. How can I get this please?

        1. Abu SusanSays

Don't you have a photocopy of the data page of your old passport? If NO, please ask the CBSA for a photocopy. You cannot get a new passport without evidence of your old passport.

Sorry to hear that. Always read the news before taking off. The website is always updated with situation reports at the High Commission. These are challenging times. Unfortunately, we can not attend to you. Kindly go through the news item below to select what applies to your situation as provided by IRCC. As a result of the current challenges affecting Immigration services resulting from the 3rd wave of the Coronavirus in Ontario-Canada, the Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa, is pleased to provide Nigerian citizens in Canada with the following vital information. 1. Temporary residents in Canada whose passports/travel documents are about to or have expired and cannot be renewed due to COVID-19 restrictions are encouraged to apply for an extension or restoration of their status online. 2. More information on applying for an extension can be found @ https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/coronavirus-covid19/visitors.html#extend 3. Additional information on applying for restoration is available @ https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/coronavirus-covid19/restoration-extension-trv.html 4. Applicants who apply before their status expires will have their status maintained while their application is being processed. 5. Where additional documentation or information is required to decide on an application (such as a valid passport), Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will request the necessary material. However, they may allow the applicant 90days to submit the required documentation. Nigerians with expired Nigerian passports planning to travel back home are allowed to do so, but must: 1. Obtain clearance from their airline of choice about travelling with an expired Nigerian passport. 2. On arrival in Nigeria, such individuals should make deliberate efforts to visit the closest Nigeria Immigration Service passport renewal office to renew their passport before returning to Canada. The Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa, will continue to post updates on the website and social media platforms.

Hello Abu Susan, Thanks for all your help. You all are doing a great job in this time! I have an appointment for my daughter's passport on May 6 which is just after the 4week lockdown. Can I still plan to come on this day? How will my scheduling time be affected by what the High Commissioner said about those who have missed their appointment coming alongside those who have schedules? Thank you

    1. Abu SusanSays

Thank you, Tom, I hope you are aware that the Province of Ontario extended the lockdown by two weeks again, making it 6weeks? So your daughter's appointment date of May 6, unfortunately, has been affected. Resumption is likely to be around the third week of May, all things being equal.

This current lockdown is negatively affecting passport renewal. Can I travel to Nigeria with my expired passport. Will it be accepted by the airlines and the officials in Nigeria upon arrival (assuming the airlines accept it).

    1. Abu SusanSays

Excellent question, Bernard. Yes, you can travel to Nigeria with your expired passport. But contact your Airline to be sure they will let you on board. As for the officials in Nigeria, they will not disturb you because you are back home. However, ensure that you renew your passport in the nearest Immigration office designated for Passport renewal where you are.

Thank you so much for the good work you do, Abu Susan, responding on time to everyone's request. In regards to your response to Bernard about traveling back to Nigeria with an expired passport. I too have the same issue and will be traveling at the end of May. I have called the airline I will be traveling with and they have confirmed that I can travel using an expired passport. What can I do in the event that I am harrassed or separated for questioning in Nigeria by immigration officials because I traveled using an expired passport? Is there a signed letter or any other document we can obtain and show the immigration officers in Nigeria that says the lockdown prevented us from renewing our passports so they let us leave the airport?

        1. Abu SusanSays

Thanks for your kind words, Ade. No one will harass you in Nigeria because you are on Nigerian soil, and you are returning home as a Nigerian. The challenge is usually with the Airlines. Once you get clearance from them, You have no problem. Please also check with the location where there is a layover if that is the case with your flight. Be sure they won't disturb you. If that works out well, then you are good to go. However, endeavour to renew your passport in Nigeria before coming back to Canada. Safe travels

My application for emergency travel certificate was received by the High Commission on March 8, 2021 for a scheduled trip to Nigeria on April 30. However, I received an email from the High Commission requesting for additional fees of $50 and copy of airline ticket in response to my follow up email. I forwarded the additional documents which was also received by the High Commission on March 25, 2021. I have since sent several follow up emails to the High Commission including tweets but no further response. In my desperation so as not to miss my flight and to arrive Nigeria and attend to all issues warranting my trip, I proceeded with preparations. On April 26, I received a call from my Airline KLM intimating me with the latest COVID 19 requirements for passengers transiting Amsterdam, I therefore notified their representative of my expired passport and efforts to obtain an emergency travel certificate from the Nigeria High Commission. I was told I will be allowed to board the flight even with my expired passport. As at today, April 30th, the day of my flight, I have yet to receive my emergency travel certificate or any email response to my several follow up emails. Nonetheless, based on my conversation with the KLM officer, I proceeded to Regina Sk, Airport (YQR) by 5am to board Westjet flight to Calgary and KLM to Amsterdam - Lagos but was refused boarding by Westjet officials. One can imagine my frustration with all the paid Hotel reservations, itinerary, scheduled biometrics capturing at Ikoyi passport office as I have even filled and sent the form and paid for the 32 page passport booklet. As I write, I am distraught with the entire situation because Westjet officials insisted I must present a valid travel document before they will allow me board. Please Abu, I will appreciate your assistance as I can't reschedule my flight because I do not have a valid travel document yet.

Many thanks Abu for your reassuring response. I am earnestly waiting for positive feedback and action from the High Commission. It will be nice you advise your staff to promptly respond to emails. Lockdown doesn't imply the High Commission is completely on lock down. If I had gotten responses to my various emails, my nasty and embarrassing experience with Westjet would have been avoided. The developed countries don't treat its citizens this way, they are very proactive and have the welfare of their people as priority. This is my first interaction with the High Commission and it hasn't been pleasant so far. On the High Commission's website, it is written that "telephone lines have been bad since February 24 and citizens should make contact by email". How is it possible that telephone lines have been bad since February 24 and hasn't been fixed in Canada??? .... are you kidding me? ... and on top of that emails are not responded to? Shouldn't there be an emergency line dedicated for citizens who may want to reach the High Commission in cases of emergency?

Hi Abu Susan, just a few questions- I had an appointment for April 29, I just want to know if I have to reschedule my appointment to another date post-lockdown or I can just come in once the lockdown restrictions are lifted. Also, I saw some comments about a $200 money order for expedited services but I don’t see anywhere in your newsletters or email that specifically states that, so I wanted to confirm what this is about. Also, if I don’t use the expedited services, about how long should I expect to get my passport back?

    1. Abu SusanSays

Please go ahead and reschedule but don't pick a date in May. And even with the date, you have to wait to hear from us or keep checking the website for updates on the order and structure of capture due to the backlog. The $200 expedited fee is for those who want to get their passports the same day instead of waiting to get them in the mail. If you decide not to use the expedited service, it may take two weeks or more to get your passport. The Mailing system is a bit slow because of the pandemic.

Hi , thanks for the great job you are doing. Are there going to be interventions in places like Newfoundland and Labrador (Atlantic Canada)? Also, with the current and unique COVID challenges, is there the possibilities for a mail in passport renewal system ( noting that most individuals already have their biometric at first/ subsequent issuance) - I think I know countries ( like the USA) that follows this route once above age 18 and for renewal cases. This will help reduce the backlog , reduce individual contact and the challenges / cost of travelling to a central point for passport renewal at this time. Once again, thanks for the effort in serving us.

Nigeria is yet to catch up with the US standard, but hopefully, we will get there. If you watch one of our current video clips from the High Commissioner's desk on the website, His Excellency Adeyinka Asekun is also hoping to get to a stage where people won't have to come for a second biometric capture after the first time. That said, yes, the Intervention team is planning to visit the locations you mention. Contact the Nigerian Canadian Associations in those locations for details of dates and venues.

Yes, Soph, The Mission is yet to visit the other places you mentioned apart from Manitoba. But plans are in place to do so and also Atlantic Canada, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Please join the Nigerian Canadian Association in your location. This message is also for all Nigerians in Canada reading my reply. The Nigeria High Commission only goes for biometric capture. The Nigerian Canadian Associations in these provinces coordinate the process. They decide on the venue and location. Those who are members of the Association get to hear about the dates etc. If you are not on their mailing list, you may not get the information.

Good morning Abu Susan, I just had a quick question about expedited services. Due to the stay-at-home order, I am thinking of applying through one of the intervention programs in any city closest to me. However I was wondering if we would still be able to get the expedited services (if we pay for it of course) with the intervention programs going on in different cities at the moment. Thank you!

Good day Ada. The Intervention program does not provide Passports on location. The team goes to capture and return to the High Commission to process the passports before mailing them to applicants.

Hi, Abu Susan, I have an appointment as early as may 18th which isn't too far from now, so my question is if the office would be available by then or not. If not, is there a way to atleast do a passport renewal in the manitoba province where i stay or atleast postpone my appointment date?

    1. Abu SusanSays

The office will open to the public after the stay at home order is lifted. We will post details of the structure here and on our social media platforms. We do not have any office in Manitoba, so you cannot renew your passport in Manitoba. The passport intervention team was in Manitoba two weeks ago. However, read the following news team from IRCC carefully to see if it applies to your situation pending when you can renew your passport. Update on Immigration Services As a result of the current challenges affecting Immigration services resulting from the 3rd wave of the Coronavirus in Ontario-Canada, the Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa, is pleased to provide Nigerian citizens in Canada with the following vital information.

The Visa application is active because it does not involve physical contact. I have no idea if the visa on arrival is currently active. You may have to contact the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abuja, or the Nigeria Immigration Service in Abuja to get the information.

That is not true; we did not issue letters to individuals. Perhaps they copied the news item on our website about it. I think you should endeavour to read our news updates instead of listening to people. The letter with the links for application to IRCC has been on our website for over a moment now. I will do you a favour and post it here. Tell your daughter to click on any of the two links and fill the form that applies to her situation. You have to apply for a visa for the baby. Go to the website and see the requirements for a visa. You don't have to come to the High Commission for a visa. The lockdown does not affect the application for a visa.

Hi Abu Susan, first, let me comment you for the tremendous work you are doing here, I went through every comment and reply here hoping to get an answer to my question before posting mine. Here it goes, I applied for passport renewal on 3rd of May 2021, honestly, I didn't come on this website to read comments before doing so. I paid a total of $106 for renewal, my problem is, after selecting the date (July 8), I realized it doesn't work for me, so I cancelled and chose a different date (May 18), then again I had to cancel when I realized that the lockdown wouldn't let me. I finally chose another date July (19) and got an email titled (E-Passport New Application and/or Renewal Appointment Appointment Approved) just like I did with the two previously cancelled. Now I have 2 concerns. 1. Due to all these rescheduling and cancellation that I did, will I have a problem getting scanned, because I am a little concerned. (2.)I need my passport to travel in the first week of August and didn't pay for expedited. can I pay a difference of the renewal and expedited or can I bring the money order for the difference when coming down to Ottawa?

    1. Abu SusanSays

Bidemi, Thanks for your kind words. All the dates you picked are not valid now. What would have worked for you is July 19. But with all the back and forth you did, I don't know what would happen. Perhaps, the unit may send you an email. Just keep your documents and receipts. As for expedited payment, you have to come with a bank draft payable to the Nigeria High Commission Ottawa. Please send me a reminder by the first week of June.

Thank you so much. I appreciate your reply. However, I finally choose July 19th and got an email titled (E-Passport New Application and/or Renewal Appointment Appointment Approved). Does this mean I should come on July 19th to Ottawa assuming there is no further lockdown extension. Also, How much should I put on the bank draft for expedited since I already paid $106. Thank you again.

        1. Abu SusanSays

Yes, I guess that settles it for your new appointment date. The bank draft is $200, payable to the Nigeria High Commission Ottawa.

Got the notification that the parcel was delivered on Tuesday (tracking number GW605360829CA). Not sure if there should have been an acknowledgement of receipt. Thanks a lot for the anticipated help on this.

For the three-month-old, apply for a Visa. For the 7year old, you can, but please, apply for Emergency Travel Certificate for her. Both do not require biometric capture. Check the website for what you need to provide and the fee.

I just book a flight to Nigeria with Lufthansa, and I have a valid Canadian passport with expired Nigerian passport. In one of your response you indicated one should contact an airline to obtain clearance from their airline of choice about traveling with an expired Nigerian passport. My question is, I have no clue on how to obtain that specific clearance, I have contacted the airline and I was told they do not handle anything relating to passport issues other than I have all my valid documents before boarding. To me this is like a slap, as I have no where to turn. I have applied for Nigerian passport renewal sometimes early February 2021 and tried to book an appointment over and over but due to Covid-19 and ever-changing stability, no luck. However, I have decided to try my luck in my home country Nigeria. So please, how can you help me with this cloudy situation of mine as my departure day draw nearer. Thank you.
