Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC)

Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) 

An Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) is issued to Nigerians in Canada who need to return urgently to Nigeria. Please note:

  • The ETC is valid for 30 days only.
  • It is a one-way travel document and cannot be used to return to Canada.

Requirements (Adults)

  • Formal Request Letter – typed, signed, including applicant’s address, email, and telephone.
  • Identification – photocopy of Nigerian passport biodata page OR (if lost) police report + birth certificate from the National Population Commission.
  • Photographs – two recent colour passport photos (35mm x 45mm, white background, name on reverse).
  • Travel Itinerary – copy of confirmed airline ticket.
  • Processing Fee – CAD $150, payable by money order or bank draft to Nigeria High Commission.
  • Return Envelope – self-addressed Canada Post Priority/Xpresspost envelope (National envelope if outside Ontario/Quebec).

Requirements (Minors under 18)

  • Birth Certificate (if born outside Canada) OR Nigerian passport (if born in Nigeria).
  • Consent Letter – typed, jointly signed by both parents, plus photocopies of parents’ passports (at least one Nigerian).
  • Custody Documents (if applicable for single parents).
  • Photographs – two recent passport photos (35mm x 45mm, white background).
  • Processing Fee – CAD $150, payable by money order or bank draft.
  • Travel Itinerary – copy of confirmed airline ticket.
  • Return Envelope – self-addressed Canada Post Priority/Xpresspost envelope.

Processing Time

  • Processing takes 10 business days.
  • Submit complete package to:
