Outstanding Citizen of the Month

Outstanding Citizen of the Month

Professor Adam Abba-Aji

Chief Medical Director, Alberta Hospital Edmonton (Canada)

From Maiduguri to the leadership of Canada’s largest psychiatric hospital, Professor Adam Abba-Aji represents the very best of Nigerian excellence on the global stage.

A proud son of Borno State, he began his journey at the prestigious University of Maiduguri, earning his medical degree in 1997. His pursuit of excellence took him across continents — from advanced psychiatric training in Ireland, to a Master’s in Affective Neuroscience from the Netherlands, an MBA in Healthcare Management from Dublin, and executive credentials from Harvard Medical School.

Today, Professor Abba-Aji stands as the first African to serve as Chief Medical Director of Alberta Hospital Edmonton, where he leads critical efforts to improve mental health care access and reform youth mental health services. He is also a Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta, a Consultant Psychiatrist, and a globally recognized scholar with over 85 publications.

His groundbreaking work includes leading a $25 million national project that transformed youth mental health services across Canada. In 2018, he was formally recognized on the floor of the Alberta Legislature — a rare and distinguished honour — and in 2025, he was selected as a recipient of Nigeria’s National Diaspora Merit Award for his contributions to medicine and nation-building.

Through service, innovation, and an unwavering dedication to community, Professor Abba-Aji reminds us of what it means to be a truly outstanding Nigerian citizen — wherever in the world we find ourselves.
