Passport Services – Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa

NOTICE ON PASSPORT GUIDELINES

We are pleased to assist Nigerians in Canada with passport applications, renewals, and related services. Please read the guidelines carefully to ensure a smooth process.

General Information

  • National Identification Number (NIN) is mandatory for all applications.
  • Passport applications must be completed online through the Nigeria Immigration Service Portal.
  • Payments are processed via Innovate 1 Services.
  • Once your online application and payment are completed, you must schedule an appointment through the Immigration website.

Please ensure that your full name matches exactly across your Nigerian passport and NIN.

Appointment Guidelines

  • Every applicant must book an appointment online.
  • Families: please indicate all family members requiring renewal. Each member will receive an individual appointment.
  • Bring a printed copy of your appointment slip, application form, payment confirmation, and all required documents.
  • Only one parent may accompany a minor into the Chancery.
  • For security reasons, cell phones and bags are to be kept in locker.
  • Passport renewal hours: 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM (Mon–Fri, excluding holidays).
  • If your appointment falls on a Canadian or Nigerian holiday, please attend on the next business day.
  • Administrative Charges

    In addition to the fees paid online through Innovate 1 Services, applicants are required to pay an administrative charge of CAD $50 to the Nigeria High Commission (non-refundable). Payment can be made by:
    • Money order payable to the Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa, or
    • PayPal (link will be provided on confirmation).
    A self-addressed Express Post envelope from Canada Post is also required for return of your passport.

    Required Documents First-Time Passport Applicants

    • Completed and printed application form
    • Payment confirmation slip
    • Birth certificate (photocopy)
    • Copy of old passport (if applicable)
    • Administrative fee receipt (CAD $50)
    • Self-addressed Canada Post Express Post envelope (Regional if within Ontario; National if outside Ontario – keep the tracking number)

    Passport Renewal

    • Completed and printed application form
    • Payment confirmation slip
    • Expired Nigerian e-Passport (original)
    • Photocopy of biodata page of the e-Passport
    • Administrative fee receipt (CAD $50)
    • Self-addressed Canada Post Express Post envelope

    Minors (under 18):

    • Letter of consent signed by parents
    • Photocopies of parents’ passports (at least one Nigerian)
    • Birth certificate
    • Additional custody documents (if applicable)

    Change of Name (via Marriage)

    • Completed and printed application form
    • Payment confirmation slip (NIN must already reflect new name)
    • Marriage certificate (photocopy)
    • Consent letter from spouse (signed)
    • Spouse’s passport biodata page (valid copy)
    • Court affidavit of change of name & newspaper publication (for marriages in Nigeria)
    • Old passport + biodata page copy
    • Administrative fee receipt (CAD $50)
    • Additional fee: CAD $100 for change of name via marriage
    • Self-addressed Canada Post Express Post envelope

    Lost Passport Replacement

    • Completed and printed application form
    • Payment confirmation slip
    • Police report (forwarded to passportinquiries@nigeriahcottawa.ca)
    • Signed request letter for lost passport
    • Photocopy of old passport biodata page (if available)
    • Administrative fee receipt (CAD $50)
    • Replacement fee: CAD $400 (payable to the High Commission)
    • Self-addressed Canada Post Express Post envelope

    Contactless Passport Application (Pilot)

    The contactless system is now available for eligible applicants:
    • Must be 18 years or older
    • Passport must be expiring within 6 months
    Steps:
    1. Download the NIS Mobile App (currently Android only).
    2. Create a profile and complete eligibility check.
    3. Enter NIN and passport details.
    4. Upload required documents.
    5. Capture biometrics (fingerprint & face) using your device.
    6. Submit application and payment online.
    After submission, send:
    • CAD $50 administrative fee (money order)
    • Self-addressed Canada Post Express Post envelope
    • Old passport

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    Can I reschedule my appointment?

    At this time, appointments cannot be rescheduled. If you miss your appointment date, you may come on any later business day with your original appointment slip. Please note you cannot attend before the scheduled date.

    Yes. The contactless system is now available (Android app only). You must be 18 years or older, and your passport must be within six months of expiry.

    After submitting online, kindly send:

    • CAD $50 administrative fee (money order),
    • a self-addressed Canada Post Express Post envelope, and
    • your old passport.

    This means your passport has been issued and handed over to the High Commission’s dispatch team. Please allow two weeks, then track your return package on the Canada Post website using your envelope tracking number.

    The average processing time is 4–6 weeks from the date of biometric capture.

    Yes. Please keep a copy of your tracking number to follow the delivery of your passport.

    You may track the progress of your application using the official NIS tracking portal.

    No. Same-day passport processing is not available at this time.

    Yes. Passports with 10-year validity are available for applicants aged 18 and above. Children are only eligible for 5-year passports.

    You may either come to Ottawa in person or use the contactless system (if eligible).

    Payments are valid for one year. After that period, you must make a new payment.

    Yes. The National Identification Number (NIN) is mandatory for all passport applications, for both adults and children.

    No. The High Commission does not issue NIN or BVN. Please contact the nearest NIN enrolment centre in Canada. A list of centres is available on our website.

    You may apply for an Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC). Processing takes 7–10 business days. Details can be found under “Citizen Services” on our website.

    No. Visa applicants should submit their documentation directly to VFS Global. For details, visit our Visa Application page.

    Please apply through the POSSAP portal (Police Specialized Services Automation Project).

    No. The High Commission cannot issue a new passport until you retrieve your current passport from Canadian immigration.

    If you miss your original appointment date, you may attend on any later business day with the same slip. No new booking is required.
